STEADFAST LOVE

When I'd take off for the gravel cliffs or wharf or gullies deep,
Oft times a foolish child, yet in my heart I'd keep
The knowledge and the love I treasured of my Mother dear,
I knew that she was always there; for that, I had no fear.

And as I grew, I traveled far, far from the home I knew;
Strange faces and strange countryside--familiar things, adieu!
But when the lonely nights would fall and scare away the birds,
I'd find comfort in a phone booth as I heard my Mother's words.

While in the military on the other side of Earth,
When all my mixed-up feelings made me feel of little worth,
A package from my Mom would come with cookies and a note
To tell me how she loves me--just the needed antidote.

And now I'm married with a growing family of my own,
No longer is it possible for me to feel alone,
But it's not without its problems and its worries and its cares,
And the comfort, knowing always of my Mother's constant prayers.

My Mother's steadfast love filled empty spaces in my soul,
And my gratitude for her is much of all that makes me whole;
Throughout the years to come and we hope many may they be,
I'll remember all the blessings that, through Mom, God gave to me.

  1. A wonderful poem glad she got to read it and know how you appreciated her. She loved much and was well loved and truely showed a steadfast love. Micki
