SOLUTION TO THE TURKEYHEAD'S DILEMMA

Fill up the 3 gallon jug, then pour it into the 5 gallon jug. Fill up the 3 gallon jug again and pour as much as the 5 gallon jug will hold. That leaves 1 gallon in the 3 gallon jug. Now pour back the 5 gallons into the 8 gallon jug, and the 1 gallon into the 5 gallon jug. Fill up the 3 gallon jug again and pour it into the 5 gallon jug. The 5 gallon jug now holds exactly 4 gallons.
