When Dad was little, a newfangled automobile came sputtering noisily past their buggy near Silvana, Washington, and spooked the horse. As the buggy shook and my Grandfather tried to calm the horse, Dad heard my usually very patient, Christian Grandma holler out in anger, "Den helvetes-maskinen!"--Norwegian for "That hell machine!"
