I don't remember how or when I first heard about the Faultless Starch booklets. I do remember that the first one I bought, maybe through eBay, was "Four Little Sunbonnets." Hence began my collecting them, and I now have all 36 of the original booklets. I was surprised at their size - only 3-by-5 inches.
It's said that traveling salesmen brought Faultless Starch into the West and Southwest, and one clever Texas salesman had the idea to put reading primers as a premium with his starch boxes. The practice caught on, and the series of 36 Faultless Starch primers were used as school texts throughout the West. That's the story.
The booklets here were printed around 1900, and were attached to Faultless Starch boxes. I bet kids were happy when their mom bought a new box. And I'm happy to have these and want to share them with you. By clicking on the titles below, you can enjoy the books right here in the Butter Rum Cartoon.
