KOREAN HWA-T'U CARDS

When I was stationed in South Korea, my yobo tried to teach me how to play a game using Korean Hwa-t'u cards.  Here in America we're lucky, having to play with only four suits of cards.  But you might say that Koreans are lucky, too, in that their twelve suits are so beautiful.  Penny tried her hardest to teach me what she thought was a simple game, but I never could learn the cards themselves.  She was nice, though, and I suspect manipulated me into winning the game, with me not having a clue how I did it.  I tell a little bit more about this game in my book, Happy Mountain.

Since then I've managed to find and purchase a nice deck of Hwa-t'u cards online, but have yet to play another game with them.  Not only do I need to know what each of the 48 cards is, but I have to find somebody else who knows.

The most common and popular and supposedly easiest Hwa-t'u game is Go-Stop.  It's pretty easy to find the game's instructions online.  But first it's necessary to learn the cards.  So here they are for you to study and admire.
