THE COUGAR AND THE BUFFALO

I had a little dog in my Wichita apartment, and then got a cat. They despised each other. You couldn't have them see each other without fighting. I tried to keep them somehow separated, but the situation seemed hopeless.

Finally I had to go to drafting college, and couldn't referee these animals. I also worried about leaving the cat out all day. So, I carried the cat inside and dropped him in front of the dog, and said, "Fight it out," and left.

After school I came back to find the two best friends I've ever seen. My dog and cat were inseparable, loved each other. Now instead of fighting, my dog would sit stupidly in the middle of the room like a pretend buffalo, while the cat came stalking up on him like a cougar, and then attacked. The cat struck the dog hard enough to make him roll over, and the two would happily wrestle. They loved the game, and I enjoyed watching it.

Since then I've held to the idea that often the best way to solve the problem of two enemies is to have them live together and "fight it out." If it could work with my silly pets, I should think it could work for anyone.
