A REAL AMISH STORE

 

       You've maybe been to "Amish stores."  But the J & A Country Store is a real Amish store, and one of our favorite places to visit, with clothing and home wares, books and vintage toys, etc.  And being truly Amish, it has no electricity.  Use your cash, not your credit card, as you get hot on a hot day, or heated by woodstove on a cold day, and as the clerk totals your purchases by hand.  We've bought a bunch of stuff there, including sorghum, PoHo Oil Carminative, a set of dice, and the Schwartz's Song Book, while talking with the Amish lady about people we knew when building a log cabin there in 1982, and she knew them all.  Then we'd go out and get back in our car, among the horse-and-buggies, and return to electricity.

       If you happen by Seymour, Missouri, head north on Highway C.  J & A Country Store is at 4910-4928 State Hwy. C, on the right (east) side of the road.  Be considerate of the buggies in the area.  The store does have a sign out there telling you not to come in wearing shorts or short skirts.  Be modest.
